Cybernetics

This is a fancy word that immediately makes me think of cyberspace, cybersecurity, and even genetics. It sounds technical and futuristic, something connected to systems, networks, or anything that blends technology and control. According to Oxford Dictionary, Cybernetics is the science of communications and automatic control systems in both machines and living things. Cybernetics is inherently interdisciplinary, evolving from the convergence of engineering, mathematics, biology, and information science.

Domains

When I think of domains, my mind goes straight to digital marketing, specifically the URL domain of a website. I also associate it with “home” or “origin,” almost like a digital domicile where something belongs or is rooted. In the academic discipline of Development Communication (DevCom), a “domain” refers to a specific sphere of knowledge or activity that focuses on using communication to promote social change and community development. The field, first articulated by Nora C. Quebral, has evolved to include four key domains: Development Journalism, Community Broadcasting, Educational Communication, and Science Communication.

Invasion of Privacy

In today’s digital-heavy world, privacy feels more sensitive and more fragile than ever. We all want to protect ours, and that means being cautious about everything we do online. One wrong click on a fraudulent link disguised as legitimate, and suddenly, your information is in the hands of hackers.

As FindLaw defines Invasion of Privacy: “Laws generally define an invasion of privacy as the unjustifiable intrusion into someone’s personal life without consent. Usually, this intrusion means breaking their expectation of having a basic level of personal privacy. An invasion can be grounds for a civil lawsuit.”

Knowledge Management (KM)

This makes me think about how we compartmentalize our body of knowledge and keep what we learn organized so it’s always accessible. It’s like having your insights and information arranged so you can use them whenever needed. According to IBM, Knowledge Management (KM) is the process of identifying, organizing, storing, and disseminating information within an organization.

Social Mobilization

From the word “mobilization,” I think of moving people into action. Social mobilization becomes powerful in DevCom because it’s the point at which communication doesn’t just inform; it pushes communities into collective movement. For UNICEF Social + Behaviour Change, Social Mobilization is enabling people to act on important issues.
